Clinical research facility to hold Open Day
3 March 2010
The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF) on Grafton Street, Manchester, is holding an Open Day for University of Manchester medical students interested in a career in clinical research on Friday, 12 March.
The interactive event will comprise of tours of the facility, presentations and activities which it is hoped will be informative, educational and fun.
The aim of the day is to forge closer links with the local community and students, show these groups how clinical research makes a difference to them and raise awareness about careers in this field.
The organisers are currently finalising a list of events and anticipate that there will be two student sessions – one from 10am-noon and another duplicate session from 1pm-3.30pm.
The list of events includes:
- Our Kid: a 7ft tall human form multimedia and interactive sculpture that charts the history of healthcare through embedded digital screens
- The Street: an interactive session that looks at careers in health and science
- Tour of the Facilities: an opportunity to meet staff and ask questions
- Lab Testing: An interactive session where the importance of labs and documentation are shown
- Examples of clinical research case studies: poster style presentation
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanning: a presentation and opportunity for students to see a 1.5 Tesla scanner and human images generated from this piece of technology
- Human Performance laboratory demonstrations: an interactive exercise in how your body balances itself through a variety of sensory inputs and other biometric measurements
- There is also likely to be two presentations: one on transplantation and another on obesity and the role of the brown bear in our understanding of how it causes diabetes and hypertension. In addition, the organisers hope to offer an interactive presentation on toxicology (subject to confirmation)
