Faculty provides Arthritis Research Campaign’s first medical director

July 2006

Professor Alan Silman, Director of the Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) Epidemiology Unit in the School of Medicine, has been appointed the first medical director of the arc.

He will take a leading role in developing and delivering the charity’s research strategy; evaluating existing and recent research; identifying areas of unmet need; and proposing initiatives to speed the translation of research into tangible patient benefits.

arc is the fourth largest medical research charity in the UK, and is dedicated to finding the cause of, and cure for, arthritis and other musculoskeletal diseases.

Alan said: “Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders are the principal cause of disability - especially in an ageing population – and as the largest and most important funder of arthritis research in Europe arc has the resources to make a substantial impact. This post should provide the impetus for key strategic investments to ensure that the public health importance of these disorders is matched by real advances in knowledge and improvement in care.”

He will take up the post from the beginning of 2007, initially on secondment from the University.
