Department of Health Fellowship awarded

November 2005

Dr Mary Lou Harris of the Gastrointestinal Sciences group based at Hope Hospital has been awarded a Fellowship by the Department of Health. The postdoctoral award provides four years’ funding totalling £190,000, and will allow her to evaluate the neurophysiological mechanisms at work in patients with faecal incontinence.

Faecal incontinence is a devastating disorder with significant social and economic implications. Its causes are numerous and treatments are not well standardised, as existing evidence on the effectiveness of different therapies often lacks a strong scientific basis.

The aim of Dr Harris's study is to develop and evaluate a series of tests which could offer new quantifiable neurophysiological data on healthy anorectal function. These data could then be compared with patients with faecal incontinence, enabling a more thorough understanding of the problem prior to the planning and delivery of treatment.

Dr Harris said: “I am particularly delighted to be offered Department of Health postdoctoral funding as it is a nationally recognised, prestigious award. Personal funding is essential for my career progression, and this award will enable me to advance my research whilst developing into to a more independent researcher.”
