A final-year postgraduate medical student has been awarded the European Respiratory Society Young Scientist prize for his abstract at the Society’s annual congress in Vienna.

Dr Khaled Al-shair, who is based at the Respiratory Research Group in the University of Manchester’s School of Translational Medicine, was one of only 40 young scientists to be presented the award from more than 3,500 candidates.

Dr Al-shair, who is supervised by Professor Jorgen Vestbo, is investigating the systemic manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). His research has already been published in two international, peer-reviewed journals, including a paper on the development and validity of the Manchester COPD-fatigue scale in the journal Thorax.

Dr Al-shair, who received €600 and free registration to the conference, said: “I am really proud that a piece of my work was selected from 1,000s of papers for the largest congress in respiratory medicine.”

Professor Vestbo added: “Khaled is a highly dedicated and motivated student and has shown an obvious commitment to contribute in the academic and clinical activities of the Respiratory Research Group. It is a pleasure being his supervisor and he thoroughly deserves this award.”
