Manchester scientists showcase work to local MP
Press release: 13 June 2008MP Tony Lloyd visited The University of Manchester today (Friday, 13 June) to check on the progress of two of the 11 research projects in Manchester funded by Breast Cancer Campaign.
Campaign-funded scientist Dr Gillian Farnie, in the School of Medicine’s Cancer and Imaging Sciences Research Group, presented an overview of her work to an audience that included top charity fundraisers.
Dr Farnie’s research hopes to identify new targets for breast cancer treatments to prevent pre-invasive breast cancer developing into an invasive form.
Dr Farnie was joined by Professor Charles Streuli and Dr Fiona Foster, in the Faculty of Life Sciences, who presented their work investigating the possibility of using novel drugs to kill breast cancer cells more efficiently.
Mr Lloyd, MP for Manchester Central, said: “It’s fascinating and encouraging to see first hand the work of these scientists that could make a difference to breast cancer patients in the future. This research has been made possible by Breast Cancer Campaign and some of the inspirational fundraisers that were also here today.”
Breast Cancer Campaign currently funds more than £1.6 million of research in Manchester.
