Primary care professor moves to Department of Health
May 2006
Professor Martin Marshall, previously Head of the Division of Primary Care in the School of Medicine, has been appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer in the Department for Health. He will be responsible for taking forward the government’s healthcare quality and patient safety agenda.
Since 2001 he has worked part-time as a general practitioner at the University’s Robert Darbishire practice in Rusholme, as well as within the Division and the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre which is based there. He has also undertaken a range of advisory and consultancy roles in the UK and abroad, as well as leading two research units, an undergraduate teaching scheme and an innovative postgraduate scheme at the University.
Martin said: "I am very much looking forward to taking up this new post. At a time of significant change in the NHS it is important that quality and safety remain at the heart of policy. I hope to use my experience as a clinician, academic and manager to move this agenda forward and continue to build on and improve the quality of care patients receive."
