The Neuroscience Research Institute (NRI) recently announced its two latest PhD studentships. The NRI is coordinated from the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences (FMHS), but its work crosses the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences as well.
The Institute brings together researchers from science, engineering and medicine backgrounds to produce high quality research in the area of neuroscience. Cross-faculty work is a core target for the NRI and this is facilitated, in part, by the NRI studentship scheme.
The two new PhD students, which begin in October this year, are:
- Josie Austin, who will be supervised by Dr Kathryn Abel (Psychiatry), Professor Steve Williams (Imaging Science) and Professor Shôn Lewis (Psychiatry) and whose project is: `Assessing the Effect of Intranasal Oxytocin on Negative Symptoms and Social Cognition in Schizophrenia using Neurocognitive Tests and fMRI'
- Greg Toulson, who will be supervised by Dr Stuart Pickering-Brown (Translational Medicine) and Dr Stuart Allan (Life Sciences) and whose project is: `Investigations of Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor and its Role in Neurodegeneration'
Director of the NRI, Professor Matt Lambon-Ralph said: “These are exciting new interdisciplinary projects. The selected candidates and projects are excellent additions to the neuroscience activity in the NRI”.
