Blisters, sweat and tears for baby charity
May 2006Professor Phil Baker and Drs Justine Nugent, Rebecca Lee Jones, Michael Taggart and Paul Speake from the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre took part in the 10k Great Manchester Run in May, to raise money for the charity, Tommy’s.
The charity, which has supported their work for over five years, is the only one in the UK dedicated to maximising health in pregnancy. It supports the Centre’s research into pre-eclampsia, the physiological reasons women go into labour and the causes of intrauterine growth restriction in pregnancy.
The Centre’s researchers have raised funds totaling over £8,000 for Tommy’s before, with events ranging from packing supermarket bags to running the London Marathon, but were keen to do their bit on home turf this year.
Phil said: “Research into pregnancy and fetal health is incredibly important for the long-term health of our society, yet receives substantially less funding from the Government than conditions like cancer or heart disease. So we are extremely grateful for the support our research has received from Tommy’s and wanted to give something back.
“Things went really well on the day; Mike Taggart beat the rest of us over the line in an impressive 38 minutes and we raised well over a thousand pounds for the charity.”
