Academic mentoring programme
As an integral part of the Walport schemes, this mentoring programme has been designed specifically for newly appointed clinician academic staff enrolled in the University/North Western Deanery clinical academic training schemes in the Medical and Dental Schools.
The programme has corporate support from the University Staff Training and Development Unit, but will be delivered locally, thus meeting the needs of the Medical and Dental Schools and the North West Deanery. The University currently supports a mentoring scheme called 'Manchester Gold Staff'. This is delivered through a partnership between the Staff Training and Development Unit and the Careers and Employability Division. The principles of the University scheme have informed this Mentoring Programme.
Aim and objectives
The programme's overall aim is to assist clinical academics in training to achieve personal and professional growth leading to academic success and ultimately the development of academic leadership. This aim will be facilitated through the following objectives:
- to give mentees the opportunity to build networks
- to help to build a framework of support for mentees
- to enrich mentees understanding of the University and North West Deanery e.g. their culture and systems
- to facilitate career and personal development planning
- to give mentees time for reflection
- to give mentees an opportunity to challenge pre-conceived ideas.
