Postgraduate research: themes
Manchester has one of the biggest specialist cancer hospitals in Europe. As an integral part of the Christie Hospital, the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre and the Cancer Studies Research Group has been integrated into the new Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC), and this will add to the existing wide range of basic, translational and clinical research projects for PhD and MD programmes already on offer. Many of our students develop research themes that bridge more than one research group.
Our research has a diverse portfolio including for example, stem cell research, tumour-stromal interaction, haematopoiesis, cell cycle regulation, HPV target discovery, proteomics, biomarker studies, experimental immunotherapy, gene therapy and radiotherapy. The featured research groups described below give a taster of some of the ongoing cancer areas we offer.

Further information
Students who are really interested in an specific research topic should please either:
- Begin a dialogue with the individual group leaders to explore whether they can offer space in their laboratory or what projects they can offer
- Contact the postgraduate tutor who will advise about available opportunities
