Raising Cancer awareness in young people
Cancer is the most common cause of natural death in young people in the UK. There are a number of cancers that show a peak incidence in young people (aged 16-25 years) and these cancer types usually present with certain classic symptoms. However, young people with cancer often take some time to diagnose. This is partly due to not seeking early medical help as key symptoms are not recognised. Young people may also face delays when they do go to their doctor as symptoms are often misdiagnosed for more common illnesses. It is vital that you seek early help with any symptoms suggestive of cancer in order to be diagnosed and therefore treated at the earliest opportunity.
Some key messages about cancer in young people:
- Cancer is the most common cause of non-accidental death in young people
- The types of cancer that young people get and therefore the symptoms they cause are different to those in older adults
- Cancer in young people is still very rare but it is becoming more common
- Delays in diagnosing cancer are common in young people
The four key symptoms of teenage and young adult cancers are:
- Pain
- A lump or swelling
- Extreme fatique or tiredness
- Significant unexplained weight loss
Most young people with these symptoms do not have cancer. However, if you have any of these symptoms and they are 'persistent' or 'worsening' please see your GP early and take this information with you.
Remember: most of the time its nothing but SOMETIMES IT'S CANCER
