Academic radiation oncology
Led by Professor Pat Price
Academic Radiation Oncology (ADRO) is based at the Christie Hospital site and is directed by Professor Pat Price. It was established in September 2000 by the Christie Hospital NHS Trust, in partnership with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK.
ADRO was developed to meet the specific requirements of the Christie Hospital NHS Trust as contained in the 1996 Bill Duncan report, to provide clinical oncology support for Professor Price’s research base within ADRO and the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre (WMIC), and to link with other University, Trust and Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (PICR) groups.
Initial funding
ADRO was supported by a £1 million Chair endowment from Christie Charitable funds and a clinical senior lecturer position (funded by Cancer Research UK for three years). The University contributed to the partnership with the provision of £100,000 towards the ADRO office space, and support for a secretary and clinical senior lecturer after three years. The Christie also invested £3.5m in a purpose-built radiotherapy research facility to support clinical oncology research at the Christie in general, providing infrastructure for ADRO’s research programme.
Professor Pat Price was appointed as Ralston Paterson Professor of Radiation Oncology in September 2000. The partnership also supported Professor Price’s interests in molecular imaging research, with the creation of the WMIC.
Established research unit
ADRO is now an established multidisciplinary translational radiotherapy and radiobiology research unit, comprising four independent, but interrelated research groups and employing 29 staff – including clinicians, scientists, nurses and scientific administrators.
Support
The group receives support from the Christie Hospital NHS Trust, The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK, the Experimental Cancer Medicine Research Centre (ECMC), the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (PICR) and support from industry.
