Cardiovascular biology
Research combines clinical, translational and basic science studies directed towards understanding the cellular and molecular processes underlying cardiovascular disease. Investigations encompass both cardiac and vascular biology, ranging from the study of individual proteins at the structural level through to investigations of isolated cardiac, endothelial and vascular smooth cells and tissues. Several groups are studying the regulation of intracellular calcium handling and calcium movements across membranes. Researchers are also studying how ion channels work, cell signalling pathways that regulate cell growth, contractility and calcification and the mechanisms involved in vascular development and angiogenesis.
