Brain injury research
The Brain Injury Research Group is based at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and includes both clinical and non-clinical research scientists investigating brain damage due to vascular dysfunction and trauma.
Research is multidisciplinary, encompassing laboratory studies, human physiology, neuro-critical care and imaging, genetics, rehabilitation and clinical trials, with translation of basic science into clinical practice as a major aim. This involves major collaboration with the:
- Faculty of Life Sciences: Neurosciences Group
- Faculty of Medicine and Human Sciences: Imaging Sciences Research Group
- Salford Royal: Departments of Neurosurgery and Intensive Care Medicine
Research programmes focus on clinical studies to investigate the aetiology, mechanisms and treatment of, and recovery from, neurological injury.
Research projects
Curent research projects include:
- Pharmacokinetics and efficacy of Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist in sub-arachnoid haemorhage and stroke
- TIA and inflammation
- Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage and inflammation
- Brain temperature and outcome after severe head injury
- S-100B as a prognostic indicator for outcome after brain injury
Research is funded by the Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, Medical Research Council (MRC), National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Wellcome Trust and other charities. Many stroke studies are also supported by the North West Stroke Research Network, which operates from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.
We seek the involvement of patients and the public in the development of our research programmes.
