Photodermatoses
Photodermatoses are a wide range of skin disorders of immune, genetic and biochemical aetiology, caused by abnormal sensitivity to ultraviolet and/or visible radiation.
The photobiology unit, directed by Professor Lesley Rhodes, provides a multidisciplinary investigation service for patients residing in a wide area of northern and central England and Wales. Together with Dr Neil Gibbs investigations are ongoing to elucidate underlying mechanisms.
The group is active in exploring:
- Epidemiological aspects of the photosensitivity disorders
- Impact on quality of life and psychological welfare of sufferers
- Potential photoprotective treatments, including an alpha-MSH analogue
