Health Economics at Manchester

Health economics involves the development and application of economic methods for studying the production of health, illness and recovery in populations and the consumption of health care services. It furthers understanding of the behaviour of individuals and health care providers and compares alternative uses of health care resources to improve the health of individuals, patient groups and populations.

Health Economics is a key component of a multi-disciplinary research group undertaking Health Methodology Research. It is based within Health Sciences in the School of Community Based Medicine.

This concentration of health economics expertise provides a critical mass to support the development of coherent research programmes as well as continuing collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines.

Much of the team's work is grant-funded. The team currently hold grants from a wide range of funders, notably the Medical Research Council (MRC), the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), the Department of Health and the European Union.
