About us
The Imaging Sciences Research Group (formerly known as the Division of Imaging Science and Biomedical Engineering - ISBE) is a world-class research department focusing on imaging physics, image processing, computer vision and the development and application of imaging biomarkers in healthcare.
The Group offers state-of-the-art medical imaging and computing facilities on the main university campus, and access to a network of more extensive research imaging facilities managed in collaboration with the University of Manchester Biomedical Imaging Institute and the NHS.
It has close links with the university teaching hospitals and with the School of Computer Science, and has received 5 and 5* (the highest possible) ratings in RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) 2001.
The multidisciplinary nature of the research means that many projects involve collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, and the Faculty of Life Sciences.
Research
The group's research activities combine expertise in the domains of physics, mathematics, computing, bioscience and clinical medicine to develop new ideas and applications.
Teaching
The Imaging Sciences Research Group is active in undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional education and training.
The Group is active in the delivery of undergraduate courses within the medical school and within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

At postgraduate level, the group has a large and diverse community of PhD students. It also offers a modular MSc in Physics and Computing in Medicine and Biology

Clinical service
Members of the group contribute to the provision of clinical service at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.
Technology transfer and industrial liaison
Since 1986, the group has been complemented by a dedicated industrial liaison and technology transfer company [Visual Automation Ltd (VAL)]. VAL is a wholly owned company of UMIP Ltd, the University of Manchester intellectual property management company.
This brings a range of benefits to the group's research activity (funding, access to data, developing alliances) and since 1996 has resulted in the creation of 3 externally-funded spin-off companies, set up to exploit different aspects of research.
The group's research is strengthened by an industrial research partnership with Philips Medical Systems in the development of MR imaging, and an imaging biomarker strategic alliance with AstraZeneca, which supports long-term work on image-based methods for measuring disease progression and response to treatment.
