Scenario 4 - Pertussis and Contraindications

Vaccination rates

Vaccination rates may be low for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Parental concerns about vaccine safety.

  2. Overly cautious interpretation of vaccine contraindications.

  3. Valid deferral of vaccination for unvaccinated infants with an underlying neurological disorder until the disorder is clarified. It is also valid to defer DTP vaccination for infants with neurological events between DTP doses until the disorder is clarified. In both situations, a decision should be made by one year of age whether to use DTP or DT.

  4. Parental lack of awareness of the vaccine schedule.

  5. Economic issues such as no insurance or transportation difficulties.

  6. Lack of simultaneous vaccine administration.

  7. Failure to note vaccination status at acute care visits, hospital discharge, and chronic care visits.
