Finding solutions to pregnancy problems

The Manchester Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre (MFHRC) is Europe's largest research centre dedicated to the study of finding solutions to pregnancy problems. The Centre has around 70 research and support staff including scientists and clinician scientists who are involved in research into normal and abnormal pregnancy. The Manchester Research Centre is one of three centres in the UK that has infrastructure funding from Tommy's: the Baby charity. Our research is also supported by research councils, charitable trusts, Department of Health, and industry.

What we do

Our vision is to find solutions to the major pregnancy problems; to do this, the Manchester Centre looks at both normal and complicated pregnancies. The aim is to put up-to-date laboratory research into clinical practice to improve pregnancy outcomes for mother and child.

Pregnancy problems like pre-eclampsia, restriction of fetal growth within the womb and premature labour threaten the lives and health of both mothers and babies in phenomenal numbers on a world scale.

The effects of a pregnancy complicated by these conditions can last a lifetime by increasing the risk of offspring developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity in adult life.
