Pregnancy complications
Pre-eclampsia and intra-uterine growth restrictions (IUGR) are the most commonly encountered pregnancy disorders.
- Pre-eclampsia
A serious multi-system disorder of human pregnancy resulting in 70,000 maternal deaths worldwide. One in six stillbirths in the UK occur in pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia - Intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR)
A condition leading to a baby not growing to its full potential in the womb. It affects eight out of every hundred pregnancies
No current effective interventions exist for pre-eclampsia or IUGR, except for delivery of the infant to preserve maternal or fetal health, which results in increased premature deliveries.
An estimated 20 per cent of UK neonatal intensive care unit occupancy results from such premature deliveries.
