Postgraduate taught
Three programmes offered by the School of Medicine that are relevant to the Psychiatry Research Group:
- Applied Mental Health (MSc/PGDip)
The course is designed to meet all the requirements of the GSCC for the full PQSSW Award in Mental Health at the Higher Specialist Level, via the AMHP Award. The programme combines academic study with practice in mental health. The focus of the course is on mental health with emphasis on the integration of mental health issues, psychiatry and mental health law in multi-disciplinary teams but from a social perspective. - Forensic Mental Health (MSc)
The course is a flexible evidence-based postgraduate programme in contemporary advanced forensic mental health practice and research that is open to students from a multidisciplinary background. This programme would be suitable for staff who are currently employed in, or who desire to be employed in, a forensic setting. - Psychiatry (blended learning) (MSc)
This programme is for trainees in psychiatry who wish to develop the skills and knowledge to pass Papers 1, 2 and 3 of the Membership examinations for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and for those who progress to year 3, to develop a research project and produce a dissertation. The first two taught years of the programme are taught in a ‘blended’ learning format, with online lectures and associated learning activities including reading, formative MCQs and a moderated discussion board. Students also attend interactive workshops designed to complement the online lectures, and to give them the opportunity to engage in practical and analytical activities. The programme is an amalgamation of the existing MRCPsych and MSc Psychiatry programmes which will be completely phased out by 2013. - Psychiatry (MSc)
This programme is for trainees in psychiatry who wish to develop basic knowledge and skills in psychiatric research and have an interest in pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. The programme is being phased out and replaced with a new programme entitled ‘MSc Psychiatry (blended learning)’. It will therefore recruit for the last time in September 2011, but for entry at year 2 only. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have acquired 60 credits by prior attendance of an MRCPsych Paper 2 and Paper 3 course before they will be considered for admission. Students on the MSc undertake a piece of supervised research leading to a dissertation.
