Developmental psychopathology
Developmental psychopathology seeks to understand psychiatric disorders in relation to biological, psychological and social processes as they contribute in distinctive ways at different time points over development during childhood and adolescence, some with short term and others with long term implications. It conceives of pathways to disorder as likely to include an interplay between these processes, whereby for example a biological vulnerability may lead to child behaviours that generate adverse reactions from others, which in turn amplify problematic behaviours. This approach is exemplified in:
- Jonathan Green’s studies of the early origins of autism, social development and psychopathology, and of childhood attachment
- Jonathan Hill’s longitudinal study of prenatal and early infancy origins of behaviour problems in children and adult personality disorders
