Musculoskeletal Research Group

Our research

Research in the Musculoskeletal Research Group is undertaken by established groups and independent researchers investigating genetic and epidemiological aspects of musculoskeletal conditions.

Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit

The Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit aims to advance understanding of the major musculoskeletal conditions. The unit celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, and is one of the world-leading research groups in this field. In 2006 this international reputation was recognised by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) when the unit was designated as a EULAR Centre of Excellence in Rheumatology. The designation was reviewed and successfully renewed in mid-summer 2011 and will run for five years until mid-summer 2016.

Around 100 individuals work on a wide variety of different programmes and projects, and the size and strength of the unit permits it to undertake the very large scale, long-term prospective studies that are necessary to truly identify the cause of disease. Recent advances in genetics, molecular biology, biostatistics and computing have had major implications for the types of questions that can be answered using epidemiological methods.

Most of the unit is located in the Stopford Building, with a small team also based in Norfolk. The National Biologics Registers are located in Rutherford House at Manchester Science Park.

Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group

The Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group was established in 1998 and its editorial base has been located at The University of Manchester since 2005.

Human Pain Research Centre

The Human Pain Research Group  is a multidisciplinary team of clinical and non-clinical researchers based at Hope Hospital in Salford.
