European Male Ageing Study (EMAS)
The EMAS (European Male Ageing Study) study is a prospective population based surveys of ageing in men.
The aim is to determine the prevalence and geographic variation in symptoms, alterations in body composition and health outcomes including bone health associated with ageing in men and, whether variation in these factors can be explained by differences in the rate of decline in anabolic hormones, particularly testosterone.
There are eight participating centres:
- Belgium (Leuven)
- England (Manchester)
- Estonia (Tartu)
- Hungary (Szeged)
- Italy (Florence)
- Poland (Lodz)
- Spain (Santiago)
- Sweden (Malmo)
Men aged 40-79 years were recruited for participation in the baseline survey in 2003-2005, with follow up planned 2008-2009.
