Infrastructure
(Lead: Dr Mark Lunt)
Medical research cannot be fruitful in the twenty-first century without the appropriate technological, methodological, administrative and information resources. Ensuring that these needs are met is the responsibility of the Infrastructure Division. The importance of both the quality and the integrity of the data we collect has never been greater. We have designed comprehensive systems to ensure that this data and any data processing are fully auditable and documentable. We strive to ensure this process is maintained and constantly reviewed to meet the standards required by the DPA, and now the BS7799 standards.
Computing Services
Computing support strongly emphasises avoiding, rather than solving problems. All staff are equipped with state-of-the-art workstations, running both standard software packages and bespoke analysis software. The Division also runs a number of servers for specialised applications, both in house and a part of the University's Web Farm. Web-based databases are increasingly being used to facilitate collaboration in multi-centre studies.
Database Management Services
The database team provide bespoke services for project management, database design, implementation and administration, and are there to support throughout the duration of entire projects, from planning and inception through to final publication and archiving. Bespoke, generic databases have been designed and implemented, for use by all researchers, and training on the use of these systems is readily provided.
Statistical Services
Researchers have access to a statistical consulting service, to advise and assist with their analyses. Teaching, through formal courses, informal ad hoc gatherings and the provision of online learning materials is also important to encourage best practice in data analysis. The statisticians are also involved in the development of statistical software to facilitate the use of novel analysis techniques that are not available through standard statistical packages.
Library Web and Information Services
The library and information team support the Unit's scientific research programme through all stages of the research process from systematic literature searches to disseminating results through the website. In addition, expert advice is provided on effective use of databases and research information sources, current awareness, literature searching and the scholarly communication process. All staff are encouraged to develop their core information and reference management skills through one - one and/or group tutorials or online courses designed to meet individual needs. Information on musculoskeletal conditions is also provided to members of the public, academics and clinicians.
Administration Services
The administration services team provides essential support in all matters of administration including finance, secretarial and grant management, which underpins the work of the Unit, both internally at the University of Manchester and with external funding bodies and organisations.
