Diploma in Occupational Medicine (CPD)
Course description
This course is primarily aimed at GPs working part-time in occupational medicine, covering the main issues affecting health and work. It is an approved course offering preparation for the Faculty of Occupational Medicine Diploma (DOccMed) of the Royal College of Physicians. Portfolio training is incorporated within this programme. Please note that although the course is offered mainly via distance learning, mandatory attendance at the University is required on two separate occasions for examinations.
Programme Aims
The student based programme aims to:
- Provide an overview of the organisation of occupational health services in the UK
- Explain the current health and safety at work legislation
- Describe the common occupational hazards and diseases, their assessment and management
- Introduce the disciplines of occupational hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology and ergonomics and equip students with some of the relevant practical skills
- Extend students’ appreciation of the relevance of their clinical skills to the workplace environment
- Encourage students to develop an active interest in occupational medicine and its relationship to their day-to-day work
Learning Outcomes
These are intended to:
- Introduce you to the knowledge and skills required in those areas of medicine, science and hygiene that are encompassed by occupational health
- Acquaint you with the legislation covering health and safety at work
- Describe and define the relationships and responsibilities of the occupational physician with management, trades unions, employees, and other branches of the profession/other appropriate agencies
- Give you a good foundation on which to build and extend your knowledge of occupational health during the changes and developments which lie in the years ahead
Programme Structure
There are two intakes in April and September of each year. A set of course modules in electronic format (PDF) is supported by online, interactive materials via the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard. The three course modules are:
- Foundation for Postgraduate Practice
- Fitness for Work
- Health and Workability (portfolio preparation only)
Modules 1 and 2 are supported by seminars (a single day meeting held in Manchester in each case):
- For students starting in September: Seminar 1 is usually held in November and Seminar 2 is usually held in February of the following year.
- For students starting in April: Seminar 1 is usually held in June and Seminar 2 is usually held in September.
The seminars each include a one-hour best fit question examination based on the teaching material covered in the module. Attendance at these seminars is mandatory and cannot be deferred unless under exceptional circumstances.
Students will engage with the portfolio preparation section of Module 3 only. This is delivered online and supported by a mix of virtual discussion groups, facilitated by occupational health professionals.
Entry requirements
Potential students must hold a medical degree from an approved institution. No experience in occupational medicine is necessary, although to sit the FOM examination some relevant clinical experience is required. Evidence of English language ability, if English is not your first language, is also required.
