Occupational Hygiene (MSc/PG Diploma/PG Certificate)
Course description
The programme is delivered via blended learning and its primary objective is to deliver academic training in most of the disciplines relevant to occupational hygiene, culminating in an academic qualification that is accredited by the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (FOH), of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). Students proceeding to the MSc will, in addition, receive practical training in planning, implementing and interpreting a piece of academic scientific research. The programme structure provides qualifications at the following levels:
- PG Certificate in Occupational Hygiene - 12 months, part-time
- PG Diploma in Occupational Hygiene - 24 months, part-time (students exiting at this level have the right to use the post-nominal letters of PGDip Occ Hyg)
- MSc in Occupational Hygiene - 36 months, part-time
The programme comprises four elements:
- A set of course modules in electronic format (PDF), each containing specially commissioned texts and associated supplementary material, together with high quality, innovative online formative exercises and assessments - all delivered via the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard.
- Seminars: Modules 1 and 2 are supported by seminars (a single day meeting held in Manchester in each case). Seminar 1 is usually held in November and Seminar 2 is usually held in February of the following year. Attendance is mandatory.
- Tutorials: you are allocated to a tutorial group at six months (held via web-conference with an Occupational Hygiene professional).
- A three to four-day practical course is held at the University half-way through the second year. For the third (MSc) year, students participate in a four-day Research Methodology course held at the University. Some components of the programme are held jointly with students studying the MSc in Occupational Medicine. Again, attendance is mandatory.
Note: All taught course modules will be assessed via examination held at the University at intervals throughout the programme and the final year via submission of a dissertation. Attendance at these examinations is mandatory and cannot be deferred unless under exceptional circumstances.
