Occupational Medicine (MSc/Advanced Diploma/PG Certificate)
Course description
The programme is delivered via blended learning and is designed for all doctors working in occupational medicine, particularly those who hold specialist training posts, who intend to prepare for their professional examinations with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM).
It also gives those who wish to pursue an additional academic qualification the chance to obtain an MSc in Occupational Medicine, awarded by the university. The programme adheres closely to the syllabus requirements by the FOM. However, it also aims to provide an overview of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene in the sphere of work. The third year of the MSc aims to impart a sound understanding of the theory, practice and methods required to carry out a valid piece of scientific research. The programme structure provides qualifications at the following levels:
- PG Certificate in Occupational Medicine - 12 months, part-time
- Advanced Diploma in Occupational Medicine - 24 months, part-time (students exiting at this level have the right to use the post-nominal letters of AdvDip Occ Med)
- MSc in Occupational Medicine - 36 months, part-time
The programme comprises four elements:
- A set of course modules in electronic format (PDF), each containing specially commissioned texts and associated supplementary material, together with high quality, innovative online formative exercises and assessments - all delivered via the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard.
- Seminars: Modules 1 and 2 are supported by seminars (a single day meeting held in Manchester in each case).
- For students starting in September: Seminar 1 is usually held in November and Seminar 2 is usually held in February of the following year.
- For students starting in April: Seminar 1 is usually held in June and Seminar 2 is usually held in September. Attendance is mandatory.
- Tutorials: you are allocated to a tutorial group at six months (usually held via teleconference, but with some regional face-to-face sessions).
- A three to four-day practical course is held at the University half-way through the second year. For the third (MSc) year, students participate in a four-day Research Methodology course held at the University. Some components of the programme are held jointly with students studying the MSc in Occupational Hygiene. Attendance is mandatory.
Note: All taught course modules will be assessed via examination held at the University at intervals throughout the programme and the final year via submission of a dissertation. Attendance at these examinations is mandatory and cannot be deferred unless under exceptional circumstances.
