Trauma epidemiology
Every year across England and Wales, 10,000 people die after injury. It is the leading cause of death among children and young adults of 44 years and under. In addition, injury also results in double the number of severe lifelong disabilities in this group. Costs to the NHS alone exceed £2 billion each year.
Trauma epidemiology and the effectiveness of different treatment across Europe is central to this research theme.
- Epidemiology of trauma
Gaps in the knowledge of UK injury epidemiology are addressed by combining trauma registry and census data. - Treatment effectiveness
Understanding the benefits and the risks associated with different types of treatment is important for all trauma patients. - Head injury outcome
Research into Head Injury, the largest proportion of injury deaths, includes variations in outcome and guideline evaluation. - European trauma care
EuroTARN is a collaborative group whose aim is to establish a European trauma registry. It includes clinicians, epidemiologists as well as representatives of individual trauma registries across Europe.
