Postgraduate research: MD/ChM degrees
What is an MD/ChM?
Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (ChM) degrees are open to all clinically-qualified graduates and are for either:
- 2 years (full time)
- 4 years (part time)
They follow the same research learning pathway as the first two years of a PhD, allowing clinical fellows to pursue combinations of laboratory and clinical-based research under the supervision of senior clinical and research members of the School.
Apply: How to apply
Research degrees by subject
Applications
When applying for an MD or ChM, applicants choose a research topic in conjunction with their supervisor and spend the duration researching their topic. Students are assessed on their thesis, which they produce in the final stages of their research. Students also have to attend an oral examination on the subject of their thesis.
It is recommended that fellows on the two-year programme work no more than one clinical session a week unless more are required for the project. Those fellows with more clinical sessions are recommended to follow the four-year part-time option.
Given good progress, and by adding a further year, students can convert to a PhD programme.
Masters of Research
Students who cannot commit two years out of their clinical training pathway should consider one of our Masters of Research (MRes) programmes.
