Programme structures
The programme contains the following awards. Students particularly interested in the MRes awards should follow the links below to the MRes home pages.
Master of Public Health
Total: 8 course units = 180 credits
- Three core course units: Biostatistics (15 credits), Epidemiology (15 credits) and Evidence-Based Practice (15 credits)
- Five optional course units (15 credits each)
- Qualitative Research Methods (15 credits) is a prerequisite for any students planning a qualitative dissertation
- Dissertation (60 credits)
The following 'specialist plans' or themes have an additional core course unit, with four remaining optional course units, except Public Health which does not require an additional core unit.
- Health Promotion 'specialist plan' or theme core unit - Health Promotion Theory and Methods
- Primary Care 'specialist plan' or theme core unit - Primary Health Care
- Global Health specialist plan or theme. Core unit – Malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB management – Health system challenges (MHAT) and / or other units linked to Global health in the future
- Global health + Emergency Humanitarian Assistance specialist plan - Emergency Humanitarian Assistance* + MHAT and/or other units linked to global health in the future
- Public Health - no additional core unit
* Emergency Humanitarian Assistance is not available online - it is taught through two face-to-face courses in Manchester, one in September and one in October. Admission to the ‘Global health and EHA' pathway is limited to intercalating medical students from the University of Manchester.
MRes (Public Health)
Total: 180 credits

** An increasing numbers of Academic Clinical Fellows (ACFs) from around the UK are taking the MRes. There are certain training requirements which are specific to this group of students. So instead of taking 'Evidence based Practice' (EBP) all new ACFs should instead take 'Research Methods' (RM), which contains these features. (Existing MRes students who have already taken EBP do not need to take RM.)
Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health
Total: 8 course units = 120 credits
- Three core course units: Biostatistics (15 credits), Epidemiology (15 credits) and Evidence-Based Practice (15 credits)
- Five optional course units (15 credits each)
