Postgraduate research

Primary Care Research is part of the Community Based Medicine Research School of the School of Medicine within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester. Primary Care Research is led by Professor Anne Rogers and the postgraduate research tutor is Dr Stephen Campbell.

Developing the research capacity of the NHS is a core aim of Primary Care Research, and our capacity building is now structured into two main areas of postgraduate research.

PhD studies

PhD studies are central to our research capacity building. Students are assigned to one of our research themes which broadens the work of those themes and enables the student to benefit from the support of other researchers working in the same area. Primary Care Research also has an active PhD student group, which meets monthly and provides students with an informal forum to discuss common issues and to share experiences.

There are currently 24 students conducting doctoral studies at Primary Care Research. Projects range from health care utilisation for minor illnesses, patient choice in the health marketplace in terms of complementary medicine and evidence based medicine to looking at why GPs work in deprived areas.

Studentships and funding

PhD studies are funded by a variety of sources e.g. Medical Research Council, NCCRCD funded Fellowships, CLAHRC funding and a diverse range of external funding sources.

Enquiries

Primary Care Research staff have a great deal of experience of supervising PhD studies, an extensive academic presence and outstanding facilities for PhD students. We are interested in hearing from students interested in pursuing PhD studies in a primary care or health care related topic. Suitable candidates will be helped to apply for external PhD funding initiatives led by the likes of the NIHR, ESRC-MRC etc.

Postgraduate taught

Public Health and Primary Care (MPH/MRes)

The University of Manchester Primary Care Research Group staff developed a web-based Masters in Public Health (MPH) and Masters of Research in Public Health / Primary Care (MRes) which contains significant components related to primary care and health services' research. Many Primary Care Research staff teach on this Masters course. Students undertake a research project if they want to study for a Masters in Research.
