Research is carried out within four Research Schools, with 17 Research Groups; a further Research Group in Medical Education is within Manchester Medical School.

A rich diversity of research - with an emphasis on clinical and patient-based translational research complemented by major laboratory research - is conducted by teams of principal investigators, fellows and students. The Research Schools host a number of national studies and research facilities.

The School of Medicine was rated 5 in both hospital-based and community-based clinical subjects in the last RAE, demonstrating international research excellence.
