University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM) is an NHS Foundation Trust serving 350,000 local population and 6.3 million in the North West, in a disadvantaged area, with a high burden of lung disease (e.g. SMR for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) locally is 170). The Respiratory Research Group is based within UHSM and centred around:
- Division of Respiratory Medicine
- 70 inpatient beds
- Dedicated Community and Tertiary outpatient (26,000 attendances/year) and diagnostic facilities
- Staffed by 20 subspecialty clinical consultants in allergy, asthma, COPD, chronic cough, cystic fibrosis (CF), sleep, non-invasive ventilation, interstitial lung disease (ILD), lung infection, lung transplantation and lung cancer
- The Division provides ready access for patients in an area of high unmet patient need, in a tertiary referral centre, with strong embedded academic support
- North West Lung Research Centre
- Supported by the North West Lung Centre Charity
- Equipped for complex physiological clinical studies, involving biomarkers, acquisition/ banking of samples (physiology, environmental, wet labs) and for follow-up of large patient cohorts (>2000 participants in longitudinal studies)
- North West Lung Research Charity provides patient and lay support/input
- Education Research Centre
- Provides an ideal interactive environment for young clinical researchers (lecture theatres, meeting rooms, open plan office space)
- Laboratories equipped for close-to-patient research, with complex immunological studies, human cell line research and fungal diagnostics
- Medicines Evaluation Unit
- Unique GCP Phase 1 accredited, 18-bed clinical trials facility on UHSM site
- Owned by the North West Lung Research Charity, built in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)
- All surpluses returned to support research infrastructure
