Research

1.1 Wythenshawe Community Asthma Project (WYCAP)
Five surveys, each involving around 15,000 individuals, have been undertaken in two general practices in Wythenshawe over the past 12 years. Data collection for the most recent study was completed in February 2005. The surveys have studied:
• the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, obstructive airways disease and risk factors and temporal trends
• detecting airways disease using questionnaires
• health care utilisation and cost
• health related quality of life in subjects with and without respiratory symptoms and temporal changes in health related quality of life
WYCAP is a unique study showing the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, temporal changes over a 12 year period and health care utilisation in a population.

1.2 Health Related Quality of Life and Chronic illness using Wythenshawe Community Asthma Project (WYCAP)
Comparison of health related quality of life between different morbidities using a generic quality of life questionnaire (EQ-5D) in the WYCAP 2004 survey.
These analyses commenced in April 2008, with funding secured from Manchester PCT to enable the work to be undertaken by an Academic F2 doctor who was attached to this Unit, under the supervision of Dr Hazell and Dr Frank.

1.3 Manchester Community Asthma Study (MANCAS)
This study was funded by Asthma UK (formerly the National Asthma Campaign) and investigated the possible association between neonatal BCG vaccination and the subsequent development of asthma. The parents of approximately 2500 children responded to a questionnaire and were included in the study, and over 900 children had skin tests for allergies as part of the study.
This study examines the link between BCG vaccination and the development of atopic disease (asthma and allergies). The study suggests that vaccination of neonates with BCG is associated with a lower prevalence of asthma symptoms.

1.4 Manchester Community Asthma Study 2 (MANCAS2)
This study is funded by Moulton Charitable Foundation and is investigating the possible association and dose response between neonatal BCG vaccination and the subsequent development of asthma. The parents of 6734 children born at St Marys between July 1993 and March 1997 will be sent postal questionnaires regarding respiratory symptoms. These children have either had a normal dose of BCG vaccination or an intradermal dose subcutaneously (high dose) or no BCG vaccination.
This study explores whether there is a dose response relationship between BCG vaccination and the development of asthma and follows on from the MANCAS I study which suggested that vaccination of neonates with BCG is associated with a lower prevalence of asthma symptoms.

1.5 Spirometry and Cardiac Evaluation (SPACE)
This is a joint study with the Department of Cardiology at SMUHT; data collection finished in February 2006. The aims were to estimate the prevalence of COPD in patients attending a cardiology chest pain clinic.

1.6 (Avenues)Exploring the avenues to involvement in primary care research
Purpose
Aim: To explore the experiences of GPs, within NHS Manchester, in research study involvement and their perceptions of the impact of initiatives to increase this involvement.
Objective: To suggest local solutions to the long standing problem of difficulties in engaging GPs in research.
