Role

Principal Scientist Injury Research at Salford Royal Foundation Trust. I lead the Cytokine and Inflammation Research Lab in Research & Development at Salford Royal. Our primary collaborations within the Clinical Neurosciences Group but we also have collaborations with other clinical groups within and external to Manchester University in the area of cytokine and inflammation research.

Research

Cytokines, Inflammation and Immunity

The principal aim of our research is to identify the role of cytokines in the regulation of inflammatory and immune responses, both in peripheral tissues and the central nervous system. Particular interests include the relationship between cytokine expression and disease and how cytokines regulate associated systemic responses. Our studies have involved collaborations with a number of clinical and experimental biology groups, both locally and internationally. Current activity is focused in the area of stroke, head injury and Alzheimer's disease.

Methodological Knowledge

We have developed a range of biological, immunological and molecular techniques to identify expression of cytokines in both clinical disease and experimental situations, including biological and immunoassays for cytokines, as well and quantitative molecular techniques. This expertise is being used to develop a multiplex assay for diagnosis of pre-eclampsia in collaboration with the Maternal & Fetal Health Research Centre at St. Mary's Hospital, Manchester.
