Biography
Marie Kirwan is a broadly based and hugely experienced nurse with a proven track record and accomplished national profiles.
She qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1991 from Trafford School of Nursing, Manchester and following an initial period of staffing a busy medical ward she moved on to specialise in intensive care nursing. In 1992 she joined a large cardiothoracic intensive care unit at University Hospital South Manchester and concurrently completed a Diploma in Professional Studies in Nursing, the English National Board (ENB 100) Intensive Care course and BSc (Honours) in Nursing Studies. In 1998 she secured the role of Cardiothoracic Transplant Coordinator before progressing in 1999 to the innovative role of Lung Transplantation sister, and completing her Masters in Clinical Nursing. Relocating in 2002 to Dublin, Ireland, she was instrumental in setting up and establishing the new National Heart and Lung Transplant Unit at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. As Advanced Nurse Practitioner for the Heart & Lung Transplant Programme the purpose and functionality of her role culminated in repatriating the care of Irish lung transplant recipients from the UK (2004) and the first ever lung transplant operation in Ireland (2005). In 2005 she joined the Mater and Children’s Hospitals Development Limited, Dublin, as Nurse Planning Officer for the complex Decanting & Enabling programme with specific emphasis on coordinating Aspergillus Protection Works. In 2008 Marie relocated back to Manchester and joined the University of Manchester, School of Translational Medicine as Specialist Clinical Research Nurse to work alongside Professor David Denning, Director of the National Aspergillosis Centre, Manchester. In tandem with this role she provides a national nursing service to all 100 adult Chronic Granulomatous Disorder (CGD) patients and their families and is influential in driving forward international consensus on CGD diagnosis and management, a necessity given its rarity and complexity. Based in the Education & Research Centre at University Hospitals South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust she continues to be instrumental in facilitating the delivery of care and training within the National Aspergillosis Centre and energetically coordinates clinical research projects for the National Aspergillosis programme. Central to her role as specialist clinical research nurse is raising the profile of UHSM through work with MIMIT and facilitating the Trust’s research mission. She is an active member of the United Kingdom Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (UKPID) Registry Committee and has instigated a Research Nurses Group Forum at UHSM.
