Role

I am lecturer teaching on the Msc in Applied Mental Health, in the School of Community Based Medicine. The course trains mental health professionals to become Approverd Mental Health Professionals under the Mental Health Act 2007. I teach a variety of subjects including; social inclusion, women and mental health and the biopsychosocial model. I am a group leader for the AMHP sessions and the unit lead for Practice Education and the MSc.

The Practice Education unit prepares social workers for supervising and mentoring degree social work students and/or AMHP trainees and leads to the Stage One Practice Education certificate, assessed by portfolio.

The Msc is a single case design with either a service user or organisational focus.

Prior to becoming a lecturer in 2008, I was a Community Mental Team Manager and Aproved Social Worker. I spent  twelve years in practice, mostly in adult mental health services but also in older adult mental health services. I continue to keep contact with practice through qualified Social Workers on the course and via various practice organisations and forums.

I am presently undertaking a doctorate on the AMHP role and  social identity formation in the School of Education at the University of Manchester.
