Biography

After graduation from the University of Leeds in 1992 (MB ChB), Dr Booton completed general professional training in West Yorkshire (Bradford & Airedale) and Specialist Respiratory/ general Internal Medicine Training in the North West, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998. He developed a sub-speciality interest in Thoracic Malignancy, working extensively at the North West Lung Centre, The Christie Hospital and The Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Manchester and successfully completed a thoracic oncology fellowship (Supervisor: Prof N Thatcher) and a PhD thesis on the pharmacogenomics of lung cancer in 2006.

Dr Booton is a founding member of the British Thoracic Oncology Group and currently serves on the Steering Committee. He also serves on the locoregional disease sub-committee of the NCRI Lung Cancer Group. Locally, Dr Booton has played a leading role in the development of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre lung cancer strategy and the development of lung cancer services at the regional thoracic centre, University Hospital of South Manchester. He sits on the MCRC Biobank Board.

Dr Booton's is a Clinical Senior Lecturer & Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician in the School of Translational Medicine at The University of Manchester focussing on the development of a new thoracic oncology research group and portfolio in the early detection of thoracic malignancy and leads on two national portfolio studies, employs 3 research fellows, and 2 research nurses and an NIHR Clinical Lecturer. He has active collaborations with The Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre (Prof Whetton), The University of Manchester (Dr Lindsay/ Dr Griffiths Jones/ Prof Radford/ Dr Linton/ Dr Blackhall) and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (Dr D Blowers/ Prof A Hughes)/ Allegro Diagnostics (Boston, USA). To date grant income approaches £1M.
