Research

My research involves investigating various aspects of the mechanisms underpinning fungal disease and allergy in humans. The work involves two groups of fungi, yeasts and moulds. Candida can cause life threatening disease in a wide variety of immuno-suppressed individuals. The incidence of candidosis has increased dramatically in recent years alongside a rise in the immunocompromised patient population. The oral cavity is a recognized reservoir of Candida and may contribute to blood stream infection and disseminated disease. Chronic rhinosinusitis is the most common chronic disease in the United States and in Europe. Although the disease is well defined clinically the aetiology and pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis are unknown. Common environmental moulds are thought to be a component of chronic rhinosinusitis. In conjunction with the Institutes of Occupational Health and Dentistry we are investigating the pathogenesis of allergic fungal sinusitis by studying various biomarkers such as fungal galactomannan and glucans, interleukins and metallo-peroxidase enzymes in the sinus cavities in patients who have been exposed to allergic and toxigenic fungi.

Biography

Malcolm Richardson is the Director of the Regional Mycology Laboratory at the University Hospital of South Manchester and an honorary Professor of Medical Mycology at the University of Manchester. Prior to these positions he was the Director of the Regional Mycology Reference Laboratory, Western Infirmary, Glasgow, UK, and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Mycology, University of Glasgow, and more recently an Associate Professor in Medical Mycology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, with an affiliate appointment at the Helsinki University Central Hospital. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and of the Institute of Biology. His clinical and laboratory investigations have focused on the pathogenicity, diagnosis and epidemiology of superficial and systemic fungal infections. More recently he has applied his diagnostic experience to investigating the role of moulds in “sick building syndrome”.

He has published over 350 original articles, book chapters and reviews and is the author or editor of fifteen mycological textbooks and handbooks, including Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management, 3rd Edition (2003), The Pocket Guide to Fungal infection, 2nd Edition (2006), Therapeutic Guidelines in Systemic Fungal Infection, 4th Edition (2007), and Fungal Infection and Critical Care Medicine (2008). ??Malcolm Richardson is a frequent speaker and session chair at major international conferences in the fields of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, and medical mycology. His professional duties include being the Editor-in-Chief of Critical Reviews in Microbiology, an Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, a Member of the Editorial Board of Current Fungal Infection Reports, a member of the APMIS International Board of Co-Editors; an Executive Committee Member of the EUCAST-Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Group, and Senior Editor of an Internet Forum for Deep Fungal Infections. Currently, he is the General Secretary of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology. Additional activities include Managing Director of MobiAir Diagnostics Ltd; and Principal Scientific Advisor: Fugenex UK; and consultant for various pharmaceutical and health care companies. Recently, Malcolm Richardson has joined the European Food Safety Authority’s Working Group on the Qualified Presumption of Safety of Yeasts, and a WHO Working Group on Dampness and Mould.
