Role

Dr Jacky Smith holds an MRC Clinician Scientist Award, is a Reader and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine based at University Hospital Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. She runs a multi-disciplinary research team studying the symptom of cough; this team includes research doctors, a clinical engineer, a pulmonary physiologist, post doctoral scientists and research assistants. She has also developed a specialist clinic investigating and diagnosing patients with chronic cough, through close collaborations with colleagues in Neurogastroenterology, ENT Surgery and GI Surgery.

Memberships of Committees and Professional Bodies

Member of the Royal College Physicians (London)
Member of British Thoracic Society
Member European Respiratory Society
Member of the European Task Force for the Assessment of Cough
Member of the International Society for the Study of Cough

Research

Research interests include:

Measurement of cough and the cough reflex

The role of gastro-oesophageal reflux in chronic cough

Mechanisms of sensitisation of the cough reflex

Testing of novel anti-tussive agents

Methodological Knowledge

Clinical research skills: bronchial challenge testing, cough reflex sensitivity testing, pulmonary function testing, exhaled nitric oxide measurement, sputum induction, endo-bronchial biopsy, brushing and lavage, optico-electronic plethysmography, intra-oesophageal and gastric balloon pressure measurements

Clinical trials experience: design, applying for ethical approval, patient recruitment, data collection and analysis, including clinical trials of investigational medicinal products for the treatment of cough.
Statistics and data analysis skills: I have an interest in advanced statistical techniques such as factor analysis, cluster analysis and recently structural equation modelling.
Signal Processing Skills: I have a basic understanding of acoustic signal processing and speech recognition techniques from a close collaboration with computer scientists and engineers

Biography

Jacky graduated in Medicine from Manchester University in 1992 and continued her training around the North West region in General and Respiratory Medicine. She only undertook research in her final year of specialist registrar training, taking time out to study for a PhD in the 'Measurement of Cough', awarded in 2004. This involved close collaboration with computer scientists and fuelled an interest in acoustics and signal processing. After completing specialist training she returned to research and was funded by a Stepping Stones Award from Manchester University.

In collaboration with Mr Kevin McGuinness (Clinical engineer) she has developed a novel method for automated cough detection. She is an inventor on a patent owned by the University Hospital of South Manchester, covering novel concepts for automated detection of cough from sound signals. This patent is the subject of a license agreement with a medical device company with which she has been collaborates.

Whilst she continues to work on developing other endpoints in cough monitoring, her main research interests are in mechanisms of cough reflex hypersensitivity and analogies to pain hypersensitivity and also the testing of novel anti-tussive therapies.
