Role

Katherine was awarded a personal chair in health economics in August 2010. She is based in Health Sciences - Economics Research Group, The University of Manchester. She has an honorary position with Nowgen – A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare. In September 2007, Katherine was awarded a Research Councils UK Academic Fellowship in Health Economics. Katherine is a qualified pharmacist with experience of working as a hospital pharmacist. In October 2003, Katherine became a member of an NICE Appraisal Committee.

Memberships of Committees and Professional Bodies

1990 - Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

Research

Katherine Payne currently holds a prestigious RCUK Academic Fellowship to develop methods and evaluate genetics technologies and services. Katherine has over 16 years experience as an academic health economist and an international reputation for the economics of genetic technologies and services. Between 2003 and 2007 she was the health economist for Nowgen (one of six national Genetics Knowledge Parks) and worked with Linda Davies, Marion McAllister and other clinical and academic colleagues on the valuation and evaluation research theme developing outcome measures for genetic services. Katherine has already established a number of innovative research collaborations with genetic and other clinical colleagues. Ongoing and recent projects include: identifying and costing pathways of care for people with ataxia; building economic model to identify the most appropriate interval for breast cancer screening; preliminary economic evaluation of high-throughput whole genome sequencing technologies and a clinical and economic trial of a pharmacogenetic test (funded by NIHR Research for Patient Benefit; NIHR Programme Grant; EU Framework Seven; Department of Health).
