Role

Professor of the Sociology of Health Care, Head of Health Sciences Research Group, School of Community Based Medicine, Associate Director National Primary Care Research & Development Centre.

Research

My main research interests are in the sociology of health care, mental health and most recently social networks, relationships and personal long term condition management. My research has ranged from exploring cross cultural analysis of mental health reforms,  professional and inter-professional relationships, patients experience of psychiatric services, the social patterning of mental health problems, lay epidemiology, professional knowledge and sociological analysis of old and new forms of treatment. Informed by a critical realist framework my work has explored the notion of  mental health and inequality as a trialectic relationship between services, professional knowledge and environmental impacts.  Current research interests include a focus on patient work in the area of long term condition management and addressing how social position, networks, relationships and illness work undertaken in domestic settings connect to accessing resources in local communities and human relationships in and outside health services.  I am keen on further developing a theoretical approach for understanding the way in which the health service can disrupt or contribute to peoples’ existing ways of adapting to and managing a long term condition. I have published over 150 articles in peer reviewed journals and written several co-authored books. First authored books include Experiencing Psychiatry: users views of mental health services, Mental Health Policy in Britain, Demanding Patients?: analyzing the use of primary care and Mental Health and Inequalities. The book A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness, written with  David Pilgrim, won the British Medical Association’s medical book of the year award for 2006.

Methodological Knowledge

  • I am interested in conducting nested qualitative studies as part of complex intervention development and implementation, developing analyses of qualitative data including secondary qualitative analyses and meta-synthesis and using sociologically informed approaches and middle range theorising in the area of long term condition management in professional and lay practice.

Biography

After graduating in Social Sciences (Sociology and Social Policy) from the Polytechnic of Central London in 1984, I undertook an M.Sc in Sociology as Applied to Medicine at Bedford College, University of London. I then gained employment as a research officer in the Legal Department of National Mind, exploring the implementation of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act where I became interested in a broad range of mental health issues including civil commiment, coercion, drug treatments and user involvement. During that time I undertook a part-time Phd at the University of Nottingham exploring notions of profesional dominance applied to policing and psychiatry. Between 1985-90 I was a a member and then Chair of a Community Health Council in South London. I worked for a while as a free lance and contract researcher for the National Youth Burea and undertook part-time tutoring at various London Universities and medical schools until I was appointed to a full time sociology lecturing post at the Roehampton Institute University in 1989. I taught medical sociology, research methods and underook research exploring users experiences of psychiatric services. In 1994 I moved to the North West and joined the University of Manchester, the School of Primary Care and the National Primary Care Research & Development Centre. In 2001 I was promoted to my present position as Professor of the Sociology of Health Care. I was elected an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 2009 and in 2010 was appointed an NIHR Senior Investigator.
