Role
I am currently a Professor in Medicine within the University of Manchester, and Director of the Neuroscience Research Institute whilst also holding a clinical academic contract, delivering clinical care at Salford Royal Hospital NHS Trust for 50% of my contracted time. Below, is a brief synopsis of my academic career to date. Over the last 8 years, I have also been involved in the direct supervision of four MD Fellows, five PhD students and two MPhil students. During this time, I have become proficient in the training and mentoring of graduate students, both in terms of the guidance and necessary support, and in terms of the academic process. As part of this process, I hold fortnightly half day team based meetings as well as conducting day to day regular mentoring activity. I am also lead academic clinician for the Walport Clinical Lectureship programme in GI sciences at the University of Manchester.
My research has attracted ~ £2 million in external grant income including MRC, Wellcome and NIHR research grants. I have now published over 70 peer-reviewed research papers with an h-factor = 22, and have contributed to 8 books. In addition, I have been invited to present over 80 state of the art lectures, both at national and at international conferences.
In the last 5 years, in collaboration with the University of Manchester Intellectual Property Ltd, I have been developing a new innovative device for treating swallowing problems after stroke. This has resulted in a spin out company, Phagenesis Ltd, and I am now in the process of securing follow-on investment of the tune of £2.2M to significantly enhance the adoption of this technology leading to its implementation as a routine hospital based therapy. Two patent applications for US and European approval have now been submitted.
I have been actively involved in helping to deliver the undergraduate medical school curriculum in the form of SSM, Project Options, Bedside Clinical Teaching, OSCE exams and undergraduate admission interviews and screening. From 2005-2008, I was clinical lead for Project Options in the Salford Sector. I have been acting a deputy lead for Inflammation Sciences and attend the School of Translational Medicine Management Meetings on a month basis.

Biography
Prof Shaheen Hamdy is currently Professor of Neurogastroenterology based in the School of Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, University of Manchester. His research interests include neural mechanisms within the gastrointestinal system, with a particular focus on neuroplasticity and functional recovery following brain injury using human swallowing as an experimental model. This work, in collaboration with Prof. John Rothwell (Institute of Neurology, Queen Square) has provided new knowledge about the cortical control of swallowing in man, and defined which aspects of its organisation are important for recovery after stroke. Prof Hamdy has prominence in most aspects of TMS, and has utilised a number of complimentary imaging modalities including PET and fMRI. His most recent work has begun characterising the role of therapeutic interventions in driving cortical plasticity and recovery after cerebral injury in association with the NW stroke research network, with a particular interest in medical device based neurostimulation. His research has attracted over £2 million in external grant income including current WT and RfPB NIHR grants to assess treatments for dysphagia after stroke. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed research papers and has contributed to 8 books.
