Dr Helen Young
Role
Clinical Senior Lecturer, my roles are split between 3 areas:
Consultant Dermatologist, Salford Royal Hospitals: 50%
Research: 30%
- Current funding from NIHR, British Skin Foundation and The Psoriasis Association
- National Research Committee: British Society for Investigative Dermatology
Teaching: 20%
- Programme Director for MRes in Medical Sciences course
- Clinical teaching and supervision
Memberships of Committees and Professional Bodies
Research Committee: British Society for Investigative Dermatology
Specialist Training Committee for Dermatology, North West Deanery
Royal College of Physicians
British Association of Dermatologists
Research
Current research interests are focused on taking forward research questions that arise from direct patient care particularly in the field of psoriasis and addressing these with modern laboratory techniques. My work is based around the recognition of molecular targets for therapy of inflammatory skin disease and exploration of the emerging evidence that cardiovascular disease is an important co-morbidity of psoriasis.
The management of chronic disease, of which psoriasis is the commonest inflammatory disease in the UK, is a key point of current health strategy.
Research is currently funded by NIHR, The British Skin Foundation and The Psoriasis Association.
Teaching
Teaching has been a significant component of my work, largely undertaken within Manchester Medical School:
Programme Director MRes Medical Sciences (Intercalated Medical Students)
Clinical teaching and lectures
Year 4 project option
SSC tutor
Academic Advisor
Medical School Admissions Interviews
Biography
Helen Young, MB, ChB, PhD, MRCP(UK), is Senior Lecturer in Dermatology at The University of Manchester and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist at Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester. She received her MB, ChB and PhD degrees from The University of Manchester. She trained in dermatology on the North West Regional Dermatology Training Scheme (Manchester) and at Harvard Medical School where she was a Research Fellow in Dermatology at the Cutaneous Biology Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. She is one of the four Consultant Dermatologists who lead the Manchester Psoriasis Service – a multidisciplinary clinic for patients with severe psoriasis – which was awarded Hospital Doctor Dermatology Team of the Year Award in 2002. Her Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded Clinical Senior Lectureship was awarded in September 2008 and she is the first dermatologist to have received this award.
Her research interests include cutaneous angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, particularly as they relate to psoriasis pathogenesis. Her research has received many awards at national and international meetings including the British Association of Dermatologists, British Society for Investigative Dermatology and American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meetings. In 2006 she was presented with the Eugene M. Farber Research in Psoriasis Award by the American Society of Investigative Dermatology and she was awarded the Gold Medal for PhD Student of the Year at The University of Manchester. In 2007 she was The Medical Research Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal College of Physicians Young Investigator of the Year runner-up.
