Research

Dr Jayne Cooper’s research uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies and focuses on: the etiology, treatment and prevention of self-harm; hospital service provision relating to people who self-harm and service users’ experiences of their care. Her main areas of research are:

  • Head of the Manchester Self-Harm (MaSH) Project, which collects data on all those who have intentionally harmed themselves (by self-poisoning or self-injury), irrespective of motive and present to hospital services in the city of Manchester. As Principle Investigator, Jayne is involved in a multi-centre programme of work with colleagues in Oxford, Derby and Leeds
  • NIHR Programme Grants. Jayne works as a senior researcher with Professor Nav Kapur and colleagues in Bristol and Oxford, on a multi-centre programme of clinical and public health research in support of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England. The programme aims to examine outcomes in relation to current models of service provision, develop new interventions for suicidal behaviour, examine the impact of public health and prescribing interventions on suicidal behaviour, and give an insight into how we might best interpret recent trends in suicide
  • Women Offenders Repeated Self-Harm Intervention Pilot (WORSHIP) Study funded by the National R&D Programme on Forensic Mental Health – the aim is to develop and pilot an intervention aimed at reducing self-harm in women prisoners and to study the feasibility and sustainability of introducing such treatments in the prison setting
  • Other research areas
    - Psychological autopsy studies of suicide including their ethical implications
    - Understanding geographical influences on rates of self-harm
    - Comparing rates of self-harm in ethnic groups, their characteristics and service management.
    - Assessing risk in people who self-harm and developing screening tools to assist management.
    - Developing etiological models of suicide and suicidal behaviour incorporating clinical and socio-demographic factors.
    - Developing Mental Health Promotion initiatives aimed at reducing suicide in young men.
  • Other academic activities: Jayne acts as an expert reviewer for leading academic journals and grant giving bodies and has contributed to a number of clinical guidelines (such as NICE and Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidelines). She is a Member of the International Association of Suicide Prevention. She also acts as an expert advisor to the media on self-harm.
