Research

Research Areas: aetiology and treatment of somatisation, psychological interventions for the Irritable Bowel Syndrome; psychosocial predictors of outcome following myocardial infarction. Aetiology and treatment of depression in developing countries and ethnic minorities in high income countries; psychological treatment of postnatal depression in rural Pakistan.

Recent Findings: Psychological treatments improve health related quality of life in severe irritable bowel syndrome, even in presence of marked somatisation. Twin study suggests probable genetic aetiology for somatisation. Association of childhood adversity and somatisation mediated by anxiety/depression; treatment seeking associated with somatisation and health anxiety.

Depression is associated with increased mortality following myocardial infarction only when depression occurs after myocardial infarction.

Modified CBT-type of treatment successfully reduces postnatal depression in rural Pakistan but does not lead to increased infant growth. Social group treatment reduces depression in chronically depressed women of Pakistani origin living in UK.
