Research
Research interests
My main interests are in surgical injuries to the musculoskeletal system. This includes hand injuries, sports injuries, and major limb trauma. In particular I have a specialist interest in tendon biology, iatrogenic tendon injury, tissue engineering, tendon regeneration, revascularisation, and tissue engraftment.
Methodological Knowledge
The particular methodologies that I work with on a regular basis include, basic histology, immunohistochemistry, bio-imaging, 3D modeling, Cell mapping, in vivo study design, explant tissue culture and in vivo microsurgery.
Teaching
I previously had a role teaching undergraduate medical students PBL as "Renovo" Lecturer. I currently supervise a PhD student, a MD student, and a MRes student. I provide some tutorial supervision to current MRes in Tissue Engineering program and lecturing to the Anatomical sciences course. Furthermore I have a role supervising undergraduate medical students with special study modules. I contribute to the postgraduate Plastic Surgery teaching syllabus at Wythenshawe Hospital. I have also contributed as an invited speaker to the British Society of Surgery to the Hand instructors course.
Biography
- MBChB (Aberdeen) 1998
- Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) 2001
- Renovo Lecturer, Faculty of Life Sciences (Manchester) 2003-2006
- Research Registrar in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Manchester) 2003-2007
- Clinical Research Associate, UK Centre for Tissue Engineering (Manchester) 2006
- Honorary Visiting Lecturer (University of Manchester) 2006- 2011
- Walport/NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Plastic Surgery (University of Manchester) 2007 til present day.
I started my interests in tendon injury as a senior house officer in Orthopedic surgery and developed this during my role as clinical research fellow in Hand surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I wanted to formalise my research time and was fortunate enough to be appointed to the post. Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Here I had a 50% research, 50% teaching role with additional clinical commitments as a research registrar in Plastic Surgery. My PhD looked into developing surgical models for tendon injury and repair, a field which I have continued to develop over the years. I was appointed to a Specialist Registrar training post in December 2006 and subsequently was also awarded a “Walport” Clinical Lectureship before Christmas 2006. I now have a small team of researchers looking into the cell biology of tendon repair, the cellular trafficking of tendon grafts and the role of tendon progenitors in tendon repair. I have been fortunate enough to travel and present at national and international meetings on the topic of tendon healing and have contributed to journals and book chapters on tendons. I continue to have an interest in anatomy and am a reviewer for the Journal of Anatomy. I am fortunate enough to have strong collaborative links with the Kadler group (kadlerlab.org) and Renovo plc. Furthermore I have developed collaborations with research and anatomical institutes in Germany (Munster, Lubeck, Dresden and Guben). My aim is to provide a translation hub for surgical technologies based on observations on the cell biology of tissue repair.
Qualifications
MBChB (Aberdeen 1998)
MRCS (Edinburgh 2001)
PhD (Manchester 2008)
Collaborators and affiliated staff
My group collaborates closely with Professor Karl Kadler's Group (Kadlerlab.org) who have an interest in matrix biology and protein trafficking and a similar interest in tendon. I also have collaborations with scientists and clinicians in Germany. The group also continues to have good relations with Renovo plc as a point of clinical translation.
