Research

My main interest is in whole-body imaging techniques and in particular, magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic Resonance physics is gloriously rich in phenomena which can be crafted into focal measurements of biochemistry and physiology in vivo. Nowadays, such measurements are often described as “biomarkers” – a biomarker being “a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention.”

My research interest is in identifying and rediscovering familiar and exotic MR phenomena, and in translating them from the laboratory into clinical biomarkers which help diagnose, treat and prevent disease. Most of my recent work has been in cancer and arthritis, but I also have interests in respiratory diseases, diabetes, toxicology, atherosclerosis, cardiac, neurologic, psychiatric, endocrine and other diseases. I also have a special interest in the use of imaging to refine, reduce, and ultimately replace animal experimentation. 

Most of my research career has been spent in drug discovery and development, and I joined the University on a part-time basis in 2007. I have over 150 publications, proceedings, patents and chapters on magnetic resonance biomarkers.
