Research

Ongoing and recent projects include:

Presentation of risk in discrete choice experiments: Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) have been adopted by researchers interested in valuing healthcare interventions. Risk is a ever-present part of healthcare and decisions made by patients and clinicians about commencing treatment are influenced by the potential benefits and risks. The aim of this project is to systematically identify published DCEs in healthcare that incorporated risk as an attribute and to appraise the methods underlying presentation, format and analysis of risk attributes. In collaboration with Katherine Payne, Dan Rigby from the Department of Environmental Economics, and Jordan Louviere and Terry Flynn at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): a systematic review of the literature to summarise the current evidence on the humanistic and economic burden of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in terms of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and costs, and the factors that drive this burden. This work is being conducted with Rachel Meacock.

Haemophilia: ITI Study - an economic analysis comparing low versus high dose immune tolerance induction (ITI) for children with severe haemophilia. The development of inhibitors is a serious complication in haemophilia treatment and prevents treatment with clotting factors from working. ITI aims to get rid of these inhibitors in order to allow factor VIII treatment to work effectively. However, ITI is an extremely intensive, lengthy and costly procedure, and its effectiveness is uncertain to date. The aim of the economic evaluation is therefore to model the relative clinical and cost-effectiveness of low versus high regimens of ITI using data collected during the RCT. This work is being conducted by Rachel Meacock under the supervision of Mark, and in collaboration with Alec Miners of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Charles Hay, Consultant Haematologist, Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Colorectal cancer: development of a discrete-event simulation model to inform decision makers on how to plan the capacity required to deliver a flexible sigmoidoscopy colorectal cancer screening service including demands for other health care resources derived from the use of this screening programme. In collaboration with Matt Sutton, Ian Jacob, and Andrew Renehan and John Radford of the Christie Hospital within the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre.

Quality and Outcomes Framework: exploring the association between emergency admissions to secondary care and quality of primary care, and the impact of the introduction of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) on emergency hospital admissions by comparing admission rates for incentivised and non-incentivised ambulatory care sensitive conditions. In collaboration with Matt Sutton, Hugh Gravelle and Mark Dusheiko of the Centre for Health Economics, University of York, Martin Roland of the Institute of Public Health, University of Cambridge, and Tim Doran of the Primary Care Research Group.
